Illustration Friday - Depth

Well, here is my Illustration Friday project for this weeks topic of depth. It's a bit late, but I can't seem to make time to do this on the weekend. So I saw a great movie last week called Sahara, and it got me in the mood to draw something adventurous. So what's more adventurous than a diver searching for sunken treasure. I approached the project differently this week and did all of the color in photoshop (to save time). Needless to say I spent more time than usual on this but I'm really pleased with the results. Click on the art to see a larger version and you can see the original black & white art below. And as always your comments are welcome.

Okay so I feel stupid! I keep getting spam thingys in with my comments, because I didn't have word varification turned on. It's on now though. I really don't need people trying to sell things like escort services on my blog. Arrgg that's so gross. So if you've got a real comment I would love to hear it. If your trying to sell me something Bug off.

Your drawing is very professional looking. More so than getting the treasure, I feel there could be a great dinner of calamari. The light effect is very well done and I love his expression both hands and face :)

I think this is my favourite I've seen this week! And it's just oozing 'adventure', so your idea has come across very well. Really enjoying your style, keep it coming!

I would have to say that this was worth the time you spent on it! It has such a feeling of deep sea adventure with the tentacles and suction cups right up there in your face! I also like your choice of a long vertical canvas to accentuate the feeling of depth. What I find especially fascinating is how you really had an exact vision in your sketch of how you would create the water and the bubbles, etc. It makes sense since your explanation suggests that would have colored this in by hand, but nonetheless...that kind of visualization always impresses me. I usually let the details find me rather than the other way around! Great illo!

This looks great! You character looks much braver than I would ever be in that situation. I love the coloring. Whenever I try to color things in Photoshop, they always look very flat and boring, but yours is very dynamic. Nice work!

Thanks for the complements everyone. I really appreciate it. As for my attention to details, I used to draw comic book style before I went to art school which requires a bit of detail, and then In addition to going to school for graphic design I went to school for computer animation a career that requires that you pay attention to every detail you can imagine no matter hom mundane or insignifigant it might be. I've tried my best to convey detail in my painting, but also at the same time I don't want to get too detailed and take away from the main focus of the piece. Hope this explains a little bit. Thanks again and keep your eye out for next weeks project.
